For the Black Widow Spiders of Southern California

Because we go without a trace,

& there is sweetness in the mimicry

of transubstantiation, when I saw

a black widow dangling in the nursery dark,

her black belly, fat & red with the swivel

of an hourglass, reminded me of warm blood.

Someone called the teacher & she came

with a plastic shovel, scooped the spider

from the playhouse rafters

& stamped its lights out with her shoe.

At the chemical plant in L.A.

where my father worked maintenance,

he saw the spiders too. They bred in the hot dark –

The male mounted the female from behind,

then lent his body to thrashing.

Once he was dead, the female would gorge herself,

nourishing the children with their father’s remains.

Finished, she would spin a sac of web,

plant the nest beneath the boiler

or behind the tool chest

in the maintenance closet.

There they would lie, incubating.

It is best to remain calm if bit.

When excited, the heart’s palpitations

distribute venom more quickly

through the bloodstream.

Soon the symptoms settle in –

Fever of 104°, violent twitching,

tightening of the jaw. I can almost hear

the molars grinding in the back row.

The last time I saw a black widow

was a hot day in Kentucky.

She had spun her web in the transom space

above the back door to our school.

Her legs were long & slender, & her abdomen thin,

not like the one years before whose thick bulb

of a belly appeared in the dark

as if she may have been pregnant.

I moved beneath her, scanning her under-belly

for a blood-lit patch of red.

But summers grow humid in Louisville,

& the spiders, they like a dry heat –

They fashion their threading in the San Fernando,

where the air is always hot, & the wind is arid.

Where smog grows thick, & the city spans for miles

beneath the missing & innumerable stars.

Copper Nickel

Among recently established magazines - "recently" referring to the past five years or so - Copper Nickel, of the University of Colorado, Denver, is certainly among the most notable. The magazine is run almost entirely by students, and led by editor Jake Adam York, who for the last few years has pushed the magazine forward, and even revived it when necessary (As of October 2008, the magazine had exactly 0 subscriptions!). In the past, the magazine has featured plenty of big names, such as Bob Hicock and George Kalamaras to name a few, as well as many up and coming (soon-to-be big name) writers, such as Jericho Brown in the most recent issue. They have also given break-through exposure to many new talents (including myself), many of whom have yet to publish elsewhere on the national market. Furthermore, the magazine has been receiving recognition from, well, the powers that be: recent contributor's work has appeared on such sites as Verse Daily and Poetry Daily four times in the last month. Plus, let's face it, the design for issue 13 is bangin'.

So, to get a little political here, if you are thinking of investing in a literary magazine, don't waste your money on Poetry or The New Yorker, both of which you can read online anyways. Instead, invest in a young journal, brimming with new talent, where the work is fresh, and the journal could really, really benefit from your support - plus, right now the magazine is holding it's Year-End sale, and subscriptions are going for less than nothing! Look into Copper Nickel, and look into it now.

In today's mixed-media ferment, how can artists and writers

collaborate across genres to create innovative forms of art? Can

the arts excite a “post-literate” generation? Panelists

are novelist Siri Hustvedt, artist Jon Kessler, poet/painter Marjorie

Welish, filmmaker Michael Almereyda, novelist/poet Terese Svoboda,

and writer Alix Ohlin. Moderated by Gideon Lester. Hosted by

Columbia: A Journal of Literature and Art.

A critically acclaimed novelist, poet, and essayist, Siri Hustvedt has published three volumes of essays, one of poetry, and four novels, including the international bestsellers What I Loved and her recent The Sorrows of an American. Among many other themes, her work explores art, perception, and the permeable boundaries between genres and media.

Sculptor, photographer, and mixed-media artist Jon Kessler combines centuries-old craft with digital and video technology to create “kinetic sculptures” that explore consumerist, fearful, post-utopian society. With sprawling pieces such as The Palace at 4 A.M. he has won acclaim over three decades and been featured at the Whitney Biennial, Carnegie Institute, Deitch Projects, P.S.1, and MOMA.

A renowned poet, painter, and art critic, Marjorie Welish has published eight volumes of poetry, exhibits her paintings at the Baumgartner Gallery and Bjorn Ressle Fine Art, and has received numerous awards in both fields, including fellowships from the Gottlieb and Djerassi Foundations. Her poems have appeared in Best American Poetry series and in many anthologies, and her work was the subject of a comprehensive retrospective at the University of Pennsylvania.

A wildly diverse filmmaker and writer, Michael Almereyda directed the film Hamletstarring Ethan Hawke, wrote and directed documentaries on photographer William Eggleston and playwright Sam Shepard, and has published many essays and criticism on film. One of his most recent films is the post-Katrina love story, New Orleans, Mon Amour. Among other awards, he has been decorated for “expanding the possibilities of experimental film.”

A prolific novelist, poet, translator, and documentary filmmaker, Terese Svoboda has published a dozen books, exhibited her films on PBS and at MOMA, and debuted her opera WET at the Disney Theater in Los Angeles. She has won numerous awards, including an O. Henry, a Pushcart, a Jerome Foundation Grant in video, a John Golden Award in playwriting, and the Iowa Prize in poetry.

An exhilarating young voice, Alix Ohlin has received acclaim for her debut novel The Missing Person and debut collection Babylon and Other Stories. She has often commented on the relationship between music and fiction, and her work has appeared in the Best New American Voices and Best American Short Stories series.

A dramaturg, artistic director, and writer, Gideon Lester was until recently Acting Artistic Director of the American Repertory Theatre. His translations include plays by Brecht, Buchner, and Marivaux, and his stage adaptations include Kafka's Amerika and Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire. He teaches courses on theater, adaptation, and interdisciplinary collaboration in the School of the Arts at Columbia University.

Come listen to four amazing emerging poets in MFA programs in NYC.

Ben Pease is an MFA candidate in poetry at Columbia University where he once leapt with joy upon finding a library book he thought he had lost and and would have had to pay a $100 late fee on top of the cost of the book. A couple weeks ago, in the midst of being lost on his bike en route to a reading, Pease was flagged down by an old Hasdic man who begged him to enter his house and turn on his air conditioner. Pease complied. He has most recently been commissioned by a team of sage editors (who wish to remain anonymous) to pen a living mythology of the Wichman, an ordinary man with a big heart who wished his name in the record books with an asterisk beside it.

In December, Janlori Goldman will receive an MFA in poetry from Sarah Lawrence College. For a zillion years, she's worked as a civil rights and privacy advocate in Washington D.C. and New York, and has a lucky job teaching at Columbia University. She lives in New York City with her teenage daughter, and is laboring with joy on her first book of poems.

Elsbeth Pancrazi lives north of here, in Inwood, NY; works in a bakery slightly to the west and across one river, in Englewood, NJ; and is an MFA candidate at NYU. In other words, the shape of her life is a large triangle.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to write to thank everyone who came out last night. We had a blast and the reading was really, really successful. I don't think it could have been better. We recorded the reading and a friend of ours took photos, so we should be posting that stuff soon.

Her collaboration with photographer Deborah Luster, One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana was awarded the Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize; and a text edition was also released in 2007. Steal Away was on the international shortlist of the Griffin Trust Award. String Light won the 1992 Poetry Center book Award.

Wright is a recipient of a Macarthur Fellowship, a Lannan Literary Award, the Robert Creeley Award, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is the Israel J. Kapstein Professor at Brown University and lives outside of Providence with her husband, poet Forrest Gander.

Nominated by Columbia M.F.A. faculty, our readers will charm, engage, and mystify all those in attendance with a sampling their best work.

The line-up this month:

Janet Mitchell has won the Hob Broun Prize for her fiction, and her stories have appeared in various literary journals and have been optioned to Hollywood. She is a recipient of the John Huston Award for Directing and a Paramount Pictures Fellowship for screenwriting. Her work as a writer-director includes the short film “How Does Anyone Get Old?” starring Mark Ruffalo and Mina Badie. She was born and raised in South Jersey, where her heart still resides.

Katherine Faw Morris is from North Carolina. Her work has appeared in BlackBook, Nylon, and the New York Observer. She is writing a novel, Rock Candy Mountain, about both candy and mountains.

Adam Boretz is not known for playing Jesse Katsopolis on “Full House” and he never portrayed Dr. Tony Gates on “ER.” Additionally, he did not play drums on the Beach Boys’ classic hit “Kokomo” and did not appear in the music video. He does live in Brooklyn, however. And his short fiction has appeared in Fawlt Magazine and Encyclopedia. He’s also writing a novel about mental illness and a memoir not about mental illness.

These fresh talents have finished their coursework and are finished with or near to finished with their first books, but do not yet have a book contract and/or an agent. In recent years, many of our featured writers have achieved critical and commercial success; this is your chance to glimpse who you’ll be reading in 2011!

The Los Angeles Review

As the 'about' page on their website states, "With its multitude of cultures, Los Angeles roils at the center of the cauldron of divergent literature emerging from the West Coast. " Established in 2003 by the editors at Ren Hen Press, The Los Angeles Review aims to publish literature that is representative both of the west coast and of the nation at large. The journal publishes work from established and emerging writers alike, some who have published books with Ren Hen (such as Charles Harper Webb in issue 5), some who have not published with Ren Hen, and others who have yet to publish a full-length collection at all (For example, my friend David Harrity published work in the most recent issue). Aside from a fairly large amount of poetry, they generally publish 4-5 pieces of non-fiction, 5-10 pieces of fiction, and a small number of reviews and translations. Young amongst our nation's journals, this is definitely one to check out - plus, last time I was at Book Culture (on Broadway and 112th) they had a few copies on the shelf!

Metro Rhythm Reading Series

We are excited to announce that Blue Angel Wines in Williamsburg has agreed to let us host a poetry reading this November. We are hoping this will be the inaugural reading of the Metro Rhythm Reading Series. We are currently in the process of selecting readers for this event. We've just about got this one figured out, but if you'd like to read in the future, please contact myself (John James) at john.james2113@gmail.com and Keegan Lester (kml2157@columbia.edu). Send us 3-5 poems or about 10 double-spaced pages of prose (We generally focus on poetry, but we like to keep our minds open to the entire literary community). There is no particular style or school that we currently subscribe to, we simply look for good - no, no, THE BEST - material out there.

The first reading will be held (*This is still tentative, so don't hold me to it!*) on the second Tuesday in November at Blue Angel Wines, Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Sycamore Review

One of my favorite magazines for some time now, the Sycamore Review is a national literary magazine published biannually by the graduate students and faculty of Purdue University, West LaFayette, IN. Each issue features several pieces of short fiction, some really cool and eclectic graphic artwork, and generally around 10-15 poems (some longer, some shorter). They publish both established writers (such as Sherman Alexie, for example) and unestablished ones, and have in the last few years been known to publish first works by a number of promising young poets. The magazine also houses the Wabash Poetry Prize, which consists of $1,000 and is awarded twice a year - once for fiction and once for poetry. This year's poetry judge is Mark Doty (who by the way is reading at KGB Bar this Friday). The work, in my humble opinion, is always high quality, and is available for free on their website, though I would certainly encourage people to subscribe!

Ian Frazier, a writer of humor, essays, and longer works of nonfiction became a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine in 1973, a year after graduation from college. In 1982 he moved to Montana to research his book Great Plains (1989), which became a national bestseller. After that he wrote Family (1995), a book about his ancestors in the Midwest and elsewhere, and On the Rez (2000), about the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. His collections of humor pieces are Dating Your Mom, Coyote v. Acme, and Lamentations of the Father. His other books include Gone to New York and The Fish’s Eye. Currently he is working on a book about Siberia, excerpts from which recently appeared in The New Yorker.

According to their site, "Dossier is a bi-annual arts and culture journal incorporating fashion, photography, creative writing, art, music and culinary pursuits. Inspired by the French word for file, we have no themes, features or specific guidelines. We're independently published and owned."

Look also for the ABZ Poetry Prize for a first full-length book of poems. ABZ is a yearly publication, and having met it's creator, I can tell you its a labor of love. He once gave a reading in his home state of Nebraska, and was approached by a publisher about putting out his first book. the book really helped him to launch his career, and now he has created ABZ to do the same.

Equipped with the authority of tradition, unleashed by the cruelty of her passion, Monica Ferrell’s debut collection, Beasts for the Chase (Sarabande Books, 2008) garners a lyricism infrequent not only among first books, but throughout the industry as a whole. Winner of the 2007 Kathryn A. Morton Prize for Poetry, Beasts for the Chase combines the author’s personal experience with myth – with figures as classically familiar as Alexander the Great, to ones as intimate Ferrell’s own husband (we assume) in the shorter poem, “Homecoming” – to create a work of bold originality, sly cadence and noble contradiction.

In her foreword to the book, Jane Hirshfield (contest judge for the 2007 Morton Prize) refers to the books opening lines as “uncompromising,” stating that they range from the objective to the subjective “without apology.” Certainly this is true. Ferrell writes, “Tonight the lares have eaten their offerings. / The sweetbreads are gone, black kidneys / Infantine and nacred as mollusk-eggs.” The first line strikes with precision, its movement short and sweet – cutthroat, even. The second and third lines, however, provide us with our first (but far from last) Ferrellian juxtaposition. Just as she presents a diversity of subject matter, Ferrell’s syntax is largely varied, never allowing the reader to become bored – or even too comfortable; since Ferrell’s language remains unpredictable. Though they are not much longer than the first, the following lines, punctuated with a comma and cut with a line-break, force the audience to read at Ferrell’s pace. No faster, and no more slowly. Thus, she commands our attention, directs our eyes, and manages our reading with her pen.

In a poem entitled “Eleven Steps to Breaking up a Hart,” Ferrell makes use of the legendary Tristan (from Gottfried von Strassburg’s version of the tale), written in somewhat epistolary style, to convey both a sense of longing, as well as the displacement experienced as a stranger in a foreign land. Ferrell, from the voice of Tristan, writes:

Dear One, it is seven years this summer.

I have counted them out. I write you now

To say the thorn we thought removed has

Festered, and spread its gangrene in the blood.

Once again Ferrell’s lyricism mimics denotation, and her aesthetic rivals, even coincides with meaning. Of course the word “counted” incites our understanding of Tristan’s pining for Isolde. It arouses in the reader a feeling of empathy. The literal image of counting out the years, waiting, and longing, is certainly a familiar one to most. But moreover, the measured rhythm of the line – with only one word spanning more than a single syllable – does the counting for us. It is not perfectly iambic (stress falls on the first syllable of “count-ed”), and so it remains unconstrained; wild like the rest of Ferrell’s debut oeuvre.

Another piece materializes on a line from the journal of Norwegian Nobel laureate Knut Hamsun: “Then my passion broke out in other ways: I took to loving light. I assure you, it was an absolutely sensual love, a carnal lust…. I never understood Nero’s delight at the burning of Rome until then.” Hamsun goes on to explain that he caught his own curtains on fire just to watch them burn. The poem, “Knut Hamsun’s Night of Fire,” spoken from the voice of Hamsun himself, illustrates post-operatively both the ardor and the intellectualism of the act. Ferrell writes, “The curtains were so beautiful, my God; it was / Like being enveloped in velvet and rocked / To sleep.” Yes, we see the violence of Hamsun’s deed, and perhaps a trace of insanity; but it is on the foot-heels of violence that passion thrives in Beasts for the Chase. It liberates us from the confines of the mind, of social regulations and mores – and yet, it remains tethered with such intellectual force, such culture, that it simply cannot be regarded without acknowledging Ferrell’s insight into the chambers of the heart and mind. Beasts for the Chase is truly a breathtaking debut.

Timothy Donnelly is

the author of Twenty-seven Props for a Production of Eine Lebenszeit

and The Cloud Corporation (forthcoming, 2010). He is poetry editor of

Boston Review. New work has recently appeared or is forthcoming in

Harper's, jubilat, The Nation, The Paris Review, A Public Space, and

elsewhere. He is an associate professor at Columbia University's School

of the Arts.

Darin Strauss

is the international best-selling author of the New York Times Notable

books Chang and Eng and The Real McCoy, and the national bestseller

More Than It Hurts You, now out in paperback. Also a screenwriter, he

is adapting Chang and Eng with Gary Oldman, for Disney. The recipient

of a 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship in fiction writing, he is a Clinical

Associate Professor at NYU's creative writing program.

Matthew Zapruder

is the author of the poetry collections American Linden, Come On All

You Ghosts (forthcoming, 2010) and The Pajamaist, which won the William

Carlos Williams Award and was chosen by Library Journal as one of the

top ten poetry volumes of 2006. Luxbooks has also published a graphic

novel version of the poem "The Pajamaist." He is also co-translator

from Romanian of Secret Weapon: Selected Late Poems of Eugen Jebeleanu.

Charles Simic Reading at NYU, 9.10.09

Charles Simic, recipient of the Pullitzer Prize and former Poet Laureate of the United States, will be giving a talk at the Lillian Vernon Creative Writer's House this Thursday, September 10^th, 2009. He will be in conversation with Alice Quinn.

Simic, originally from Yugoslavia (in what is now Serbia) is the author of numerous books of poetry. His Selected Poems: 1963-2003 received the 2005 International Griffin Poetry Prize, and his collection The World Doesn’t End: Prose Poems won him the Pullitzer in 1990. His most recent collection of poems is That Little Something (Hartcourt, 2008). He will be speaking on his recent work of nonfiction, The Renegade: Writing on Poetry and a Few Other Things (Braziller, 2009).
